A 4.8 from twelve ratings and a 4.4 from nine thousand ratings describe very different levels of confidence. When a score has few ratings behind it, treat it as an early signal rather than a conclusion.
Recency matters more than the lifetime average
Products get revised and service teams change. Recent ratings often describe a different version of what you would actually buy today, so a lifetime average can hide a recent improvement or decline.
This is why every sourced rating on this site carries the date we checked it — a score without a date has no shelf life.
Read the distribution, not just the average
Two options can share the same average while one has consistent middling scores and the other has a mix of very high and very low ones. A split distribution usually points to a specific issue worth reading about in the low reviews.
Look for repeated specifics
One reviewer mentioning slow support is an anecdote. The same complaint appearing across many reviews and multiple platforms is a pattern, and patterns are the part of review data that tends to hold up.
What ratings cannot tell you
Ratings do not tell you whether something fits your requirements, whether the price is currently competitive, or how the terms compare. They are one input among published specifications, pricing, warranty terms and provider information.
